What is Socapex

“Socapex is a brand of electrical connectors, known in the entertainment industry primarily for their 19-pin electrical connectors, commonly known as Socapex connectors, and used in film, television, and stage lighting to terminate the ends of a multicable. They are wired with six hot/live pins, six neutral pins, six ground/earth pins, and a final central pin used to aid alignment of the male end of the connector with a female receptacle.”

In the NT we use socapex or soca cables to more effciently run dimmed power in temporay spaces. Soca cable can carry 6 channels of dimming, our portable dimmer has two soca outputs (12 channels total). We then run the cables to the rig and 'break-out' into individual lines which are then connected to the fixtures.

We use 'spiders', breakouts that have the outputs on their own numbered cables or 'tails' as these are less bulky that containing the breakout in a box and is therefore tider when used in the rigs in studios A and B.

Of course you can connect the breakouts directly into the back of the dimmer without using the multicable if power is needed nearby the dimmer.

When using socapex connections the joins must be tight. Loose connections can cause electrical arcs between the contact surfaces, this is a fire risk and damages equiptment.
