The trainee must be fully competant in all the other sections of Technician. As a TD they will be supervising less experienced members.

Only the Company Technical Director can appoint a Technician to TD shows, it is down to the CTD whether they believe the Technician has enough experience to TD shows.

Beyond the technical aspects the role of TD requires organisation, people management and communication skills. A New Theatre production is very dependant on a TD for its smooth running.
