This set of pages will be useful to sound designers and techies. Over the summer of 2013 a new PA was installed, replacing our old and insufficent system.

Theatre

Speakers

For the install PA, the tops are RCF C3110s and the sub is an RCF S8015LP.

Mixing

The mixer in the theatre is a Soundcraft Si Expression 2.

The desk has 24 recallable mic pre amps plus 4 line inputs, 4 internal stereo FX returns. For more information on the default setup of the desk in the theatre see the sound plans.

New Theatre Sound Tutorial.

Playback

All the built-in playback devices are housed in the Playback Rack.

QLab

QLab plays audio and video from an ordered cue list.

QLab makes it simple to create rich multimedia designs for live performances and installations. From Broadway to the West End, in churches, museums, store fronts, concert halls, and theaters around the world, people use QLab to bring their audio and video to life.

CD

CD players are Numark CDN22 Mk5. They are is a straightforward dual-CD players. Easy-to-use jog wheels for rapid search and pitch bend.

Cabling

There is a 12 way multicore running to stage right, a 4 way on stage left and another 4 way in the seating block.

Channels 1-8 stage right and 1-3 stage left are by default connected to the sound desk and can be used straight away.

There is a 4 way multicore in row D of the seating block, this can be used either for:

  • Connecting four channels of the playback rack (in the house) to the mixer (in the box)
  • Connecting the mixer (in the house) to three amps (in the box)

In the first case:

  • Remove the placyback rack from the tech box
  • Connect 1→4 of the seats multi to 11→14 on the mixer
  • Hook up the playback rack in the seats with 11→14 going to 1→4 on the multi box
  • Use as normal, obviously you are limited to L, R, foyer and one other so this may not be ideal if you need outputs 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Fringe / External

We have a pair of RCF ART 310-As these are powered speakers, the amp is included in the box. This makes the system more portable. They're mainly used for Fringe shows but can also be used in the main space as practical speakers or monitors.

These speakers can either use the signal from a mixer, a microphone or a line input (such as an iPod). It's recommended to use a mixer for shows as you lack control with the latter two setups. You can run signal to them independantly - stereo - or daisy chain them together - mono. Do bear in mind you'll need power for each speaker (and probably an extension lead).

Our portable mixer is the Yamaha MG124CX, a small analogue board with four mono and four stereo inputs. Outputs are a stereo out and a group 1-2 out.

The usual configuration will take four microphones, two minijacks (iPods) and dual CD players.

For playback we have NUMARK dual CD players in a 2U rack case.
